Countdown to National Wear Red Day 2017!
For those of you that don't know me personally, I'm relatively private about my health struggles. I'm trying to be more open about them as I find sharing my struggles may actually help or inspire someone who may be going through the same thing. I've always had an irregular heart beat for as long as I can remember but with age it has gotten more noticeable. I initially had a slight murmur which over time was followed by arrythmia and angina in my 20's and of course after several doctors and specialists... most of which said "You're young.... you're fine..." I'm now in my late 30's with the same fears and concerns.... and taking extra precautions now that docotrs are LISTENING to me and considering my age. Fortunately, I took an active role in taking charge of my health early on. I made major life style changes on my own regardless of what doctors said.... Being in my 20's and feeling as though I was having a heart attack was NOT normal. Nor was the discovery that I have a heart valve that doesn't pump as it should, causing me to feel like I have a butterfly in my chest at times. I'm 38 years old now... (yes! and proud of it) I'm fitter than I ever was in my 20's and feel more aware and in control of my body. I still have bouts of illness once in a blue moon but I allow my self to REST and RECOVER. National Wear Red Day is important to me because I do fit the criteria for risk of heart attack or stroke. If I can do anything to help bring awareness to the seriousness of this... or to help find answers/resources in order to save a women's life, including my own; I'm all in.
This National Wear Red Day marks 15 years since the initial National Wear Red Day, which was first observed to bring national attention to the fact that heart disease is the #1 killer of women, and to raise awareness of women’s heart health. Over the years, bringing awareness to the cause has brought a lot of progress such as....
1. Approx. 90% of women have made at least one healthy behavior change.
2. More than one-third of women has lost weight.
3. More than 50% of women have increased their exercise.
4. 6 of 10 women have made changes to their diets.
5. More than 40% of women have had their cholesterol levels checked.
6. 1/3rd of women is now developing heart health plans with their physician.
7. Today, nearly 300 fewer women die from heart disease and stroke each day.
8. Death in women has decreased by more than 30 percent over the past 10 years.
Still.....1 in 3 women die of heart disease and stroke each year. Awareness of the cause is very important, so are the contributions that are made to support Go Red. Go Red supports the educational programs to increase women’s awareness about risks for heart disease and stroke. It also supports critical research to discover scientific knowledge about cardiovascular health.
